Presentation plan
This presentation outline is intended for use by counselors
to help students learn or reinforce why it is important to go to college.
Speaker introduces him- or herself. Include educational and professional
requirements to reach current position.
Speaker divides group into small groups of 4 to 6 participants, depending
on the overall size of the class.
Each small group is instructed to discuss 4 career possibilities
and what is necessary to prepare for each. Each group selects
a person to report the group's
work.
To start the activity, the speaker provides at least one
example, e.g., teacher and/or auto-mechanic.
Groups perform the activity.
Speaker asks each group to report on their 4 career
possibilities.
Speaker makes observations regarding:
Common thread of education and training requirements for each career
possibility.
Economic benefits of each career possibility;
specifically where possible, generally where necessary. NOTE: Use transparency
and/or handout for reference
data.
Speaker briefly mentions that there are many ways to pay for college.
Family resources - Can parents, aunts,
uncles or other family members help pay educational costs
Grants - Money that does not have to be paid back, usually based on financial
need.
Scholarships - Money that does not have to be paid back, usually based
on community service, grade point average, or other special criteria.
Work Study - Financial aid that is earned by working for the money.
Student Loans - Money that has to be paid back.
Speaker summarizes the session briefly and positively alludes to educational
financing sources. Speaker encourages audience to learn more about careers
and the training a particular career requires.
